Who’s whom

As austerity grips the nation these people will be earning their crust in new workhouses:

John Steele, currently chief executive at UK Sport is to join the Rugby Football Union with the same job title and Duncan Locke has been named as senior performance analyst in their elite rugby department after a spell at the English Institute of Sport where his work included supporting gold medal winners Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton; DC Leisure has appointed Richard Cowley as group health and wellbeing manager, where he will be developing programmes and products which help DC Leisure and its local authority clients to meet the government’s health and wellbeing agenda; Christine Bleakley has joined what some are calling a talent drain from the BBC to ITV where she will join former One Show colleague and  professional curmudgeon Adrian Chiles on a sofa; Olympic bronze medallist Tasha Danvers has been appointed to serve on the prestigious European Athletics Athlete Commission; and former England head coach Brian Ashton is back in rugby as a coaching consultant with Fylde.

Who’s looking for whom

And with the optimism of an England fan booking tickets for the soccer World Cup final these organisations are recruiting:

Best be quick if you want the six-figure salary and the close working relationship with Sue Campbell that goes with being chief executive of UK Sport as the list closes on 5 July. Meanwhile Promote PR are on the hunt for 3 new people – a senior account executive and two senior account managers; LT Pub Management are recruiting caretakers and security for closed public houses throughout the UK due to a “rapid expansion” in this area of endeavour; German company Upsolut have need of a £60,000 per annum operations manager to lead on sporting events throughout the UK including the triathlon world championship; Royal Holloway College are searching for a repository and digital assets manager at about £35,000 pa; and Arts Council England are recruiting a relationship manager, music, for their West Midlands region and a senior manager, visual arts in Manchester.

Spotlight: Vicky Murphy

Current position
Apprentice specialist chef working at Langan’s Brasserie in London doing the first of three years in industry as part of my course at Bournemouth and Poole College. At the minute I am prepping and cooking all the vegetables that we use to serve the 200 or more covers we get in a service but I have covered most sections in the kitchen.

Biggest challenge in the next 12 months?
Christmas! We’ll be doing 600 covers in a shift and that puts real pressure on everyone. Other than that going back to a college environment for three months in January might be a bit strained.

Which job within the sport, leisure and hospitality sector would you most like to do?
When I’ve done my qualification I want to travel the world cooking in different countries and kitchens. The skills I will learn at Langan’s and at college should mean I can work just about anywhere where people eat.

Who or what has inspired you in your career?
My grandma used to spend hours with me baking when I was a little girl and that gave me a love of cooking. And I suppose I should say Chef Bolan who scared the living daylights out of us in our first few weeks at Bournemouth but really gave me the confidence to cope with a London kitchen.

What advice would you offer to a young person entering the industry?
Younger than me? I’m 16.

What advice, then, would you give to older people who now run the industry?
Just because we are young doesn’t mean we have no discipline or pride in our work. Everyone on my course realises the importance of discipline when we work and are getting used to the shouting so that even when its unfair it only makes us more determined. But some of the shifts could be a bit more reasonable and we could all do with a bit more in the pay packet.
