Who’s whom:

Rather than wait on Signor Capello, these people have found themselves new squads to play with:

Richard Sheen, formerly at Nautilus, has been appointed as national sales manager at Pulse and Paul Shinners moves to the more strategic role of commercial director; fashion group Gucci has appointed Sarah Burton to the post of creative director at the Alexander McQueen label; Calum Donnelly has joined Merseyside Sports Partnership as senior development manager following spells with England Basketball, Greater Sport and Bury School Sports Partnership; new fitness club chain Nuyuu Fitness, which is part-owned by Dragons’ Den entrepreneur James Caan, has appointed Rangel Sehalic as group operations manager; and Alex Horne has been named general secretary of the Football Association on a permanent basis, having served as acting chief executive officer following Ian Watmore's departure in March. Paul Lynch has left his job as sales and marketing manager with England Squash to join Human Race Ltd as head of marketing and communication. Andrew Hanson says, “I’ll be leaving CCPR for Sport England’s south west region at the end of July.” Professor Dame Sally Davies will take up the role of chief medical officer following the departure of Sir Liam Donaldson at the end of May "until a substantive appointment is made". John Bandler has joined Capita Symonds as director of regeneration and leisure.

Who’s looking for whom

While these international managers are still looking to finalise their 23:

Table Tennis Ulster are in need of a £32,000 pa performance development officer; while, also in Northern Ireland, the Ulster Orchestra is after a chief executive with a knowledge of orchestral music and a clear artistic vision; a grounds and gardens team leader is being sought by the Westway Development Trust but as that’s the Westway in West London the £23,000 on offer seems a little weedy; Quebec – the Canadian province – has sent a Mountie out to find it a cultural attaché for its Pall Mall office with a bounty of £44,934 to offer; Bristol Zoo, or more particularly the Bristol, Clifton and West of England Zoological Society, is on safari for a visionary strategist with a charismatic leadership style to be its chief executive; the charity that manages pools for Bath and North East Somerset council, Aquaterra Leisure are recruiting a lifeguard and will pay up to £15,258 pa for a 40-hour week; and British Universities and Colleges Sport is prepared to pay £40,000 to 50,000 pa to a head of communications, commercial and marketing with a brief to raise the profile of the organisation, tap into emerging digital technologies and further improve income streams.

Spotlight: Dan Morgan

What is your current position?
I run Blue Leisure, a dual-use leisure operator in Surrey. We work with schools and education confederations to run sports centres, community sports programmes and run Extended Service programmes for the schools where we are based. We also do some great charity work with Baraka Community Partnerships and we are helping to create partnerships between schools and communities in developing countries.

Biggest challenge over the next twelve months?
Building on current relationships, encouraging schools to invest in facilities and proving how sport and leisure can have a positive effect on a child's academic performance and general education. There are also real financial benefits to a school which has a successful sports centre running on site and also in terms of the extended agenda which schools are having to accommodate.

Which job within sport and leisure sector would you most like to do?
Anything which allows me to stay working at a grassroots level in sport, especially with children. My current position allows me to do coaching, run clubs and the fun parts but also to get stuck into the business end and talk local strategy with decision makers – you can't beat that!

Who or what has inspired you in your career?
A few key people have provided all the inspiration and direction: my first boss, Duncan Wood-Allum, who continues to mentor and support me; my school head teacher (and later employer), Andrew Thompson, who continues to provide useful education support. My family are small business owners and have the hard-work ethic so it's a pretty good combination.

What advice would you offer to a young person entering the industry?
Find work with quality employers. Good managers and bosses to give you the right experience and direction are far more important than the qualifications you may pick up along the way. Find a role you are passionate about and believe in, both personally and professionally and you'll work so much harder!

Which single thing could improve the sector?
Co-ordination and communication between organisations to help get common agendas and plans together. Too many managers and agendas leads to disjointed and unco-ordinated provision which often has no real impact.

What could the sector do without?
Political interference. Even at ground level sport and leisure, local council and individual agendas tend to steer projects and provision in the wrong direction. Quality consultation with, and advice from, people who are actually involved (children, parents and providers) should be the basis for all local provision.

Where do you hope to be in ten years time?
Still working at local, grassroots leisure with good people, watching the development of the business and families we serve. I would like to find some new schools to work with and team up with some partners to expand the areas of leisure provision we work in. I would also like to progress my Baraka work by seeing schools take up some of our charity partnerships.
